Prepare yourself for employment or entrepreneurship in the profession of sewing. The Sewing Salon Training Program @ The Sewing Labs is a 1 year program with a commitment of up to 30 weeks of hands-on sewing instruction on both domestic and industrial machines and entrepreneurial business training to support you and an Apprenticeship Program with a local Kansas City Business covering the remaining 20 weeks.

The Sewing Labs is a Registered Apprenticeship Training Operation with the Missouri Department of Labor and the United States Department of Labor. Student who complete this Apprenticeship program will receive multiple certificates including The Sewing Labs Certificate in Domestic Sewing Skills, Certificate in Industrial Sewing Skills and the US DOL Certificate of Apprenticeship. Each of these certificates represent a significate accomplishment by the student and a great addition to their resume whether they will become a employee or an entrepreneur.

You will learn the fundamentals of the craft of sewing, Industrial productions methods and participate in site tours to local businesses who are actively seeking to hire Industrial Sewing Machine Operators. A tool kit is provided. Participants must participant in an entrance interview & assessment to be accepted into the program.

Basic Sewing - Phase 1 - This course if for a beginner who has never sewn before or for someone who has not sewn for awhile and needs a refresher course. You will learn to operate a domestic sewing machine including threading, basic operation and safety & maintenance. You will also learn the tools of the trade and more while making some simple projects & a tool caddy. Each week you will learn a new skill and you will have home practice work to complete. At the end of this course you can earn a certification thru testing. This course is also part of our Sewing Salon program - for employment, entrepreneurship and enrichment.

This course will be lead by Cali Roberta on Saturdays & Robert Lackie - on week days -Classroom Instructors for Domestic machine.

All materials and supplies are included with this course. You can use our machines & tools or bring your own to learn with.

This course will get you back to sewing and then you can continue to more courses for additional certificates or just for self enrichment.

Online format - Do you want to start a business in sewing?
Facilitated by Jim & Trisha Fridell of the Opus Group

You will be guided by your instructors through the modules of the Smart Money program hosted thru The Sewing Labs. There are 13 models to be covered. During the 13 months program you will have the opportunity to learn different aspects of running your own sewing business taught by local business professional. In addition, local creative business professionals will share their stories of the start up and running of their businesses.

Classes will be held by Zoom on the 2nd & 4th Tuesday, from 6-7:30 pm.
You will have homework for the weeks in between. You can attend the modules monthly or sign up for the entire 13 months. (sign up for year through our website. A workbook will be provided by email.

Business of Sewing – Entrepreneurial

Entrepreneurs will:
- Understand the basics of marketing a start-up business
- Learn about consumer research and product/service development
- Discover marketing tools for growth and expansion

Boro Stitching Workshop - 2/ 3

Learn the history and process of Japanese Boro Stitching while creating re- purposed cloth and then constructing a cross-body bag.

Boro means, literally, "tatters". These were made by re-purposing carefully saved garment pieces and other hand-spun and indigo-dyed fabrics --- Makers used careful patching and sometimes intricate stitching to craft these textiles, mending the same item many times over many generations.
Bring a cherished or favorite garment that is no longer wearable and honor it by stitching a new object using the Boro stitch method.

Fiber Artist, Kris Smither, will guide you through the history and process of this mindful practice during a 3 session course to complete your bag.

Sewing Machine Basics – Domestic = Did you receive a sewing machine as a gift or are just getting started? Learn to use your new machine or refresh your skills. If you don't have a machine but, still want to learn - you can use one of ours for this class. You will learn how to thread your machine, wind a bobbin and more. Basic sewing operations including stitch width & length & pattern selection will be covered. You will make samples as you learn for future reference.
Bring your machine and all its accessories & tools. This does not cover embroidery machines.

SEW POWERFUL PURSE taught by Chris McMullen – Sew Powerful, a non-profit organization, asks seamstresses from around the world to make and donate a purse for a schoolgirl in Zambia. The purse is filled with re-usable feminine hygiene supplies made by those employed in Zambia by Sew Powerful. The girl receives the purse and supplies in her health training class to enable her to attend school all month and improve her academic performance. With Chris' instruction, you will learn to sew the cross-body purse from the free pattern provided by Sew Powerful. Your bag created will be donated to Sew Powerful! You will learn the skills to make this bag and you can contribute to this wonderful organization by helping them achieve their 2021 goal of collecting and distributing 24,000 purses. All materials included.

New to The Sewing Labs - This course is required if you want to rent a sewing station @ TSL.
This is a 2 session course covering basic operator & safety skills for the Industrial Straight Needle and Serger machines. It covers proper threading and adjusting for different fabrics, proper tension and how to improve your stitch performance. Changing needles and feet and essential machines maintenance. It is taught by Cali Roberta - Industrial Instructor /Production Manager

Session #1 - Dec 11th - will over Industrial Straight needle machines
Session #2 - Dec 18th - will cover Industrial Serger Machines

This course is REQUIRED prior to rental of an industrial machine @ The Sewing Labs. Class is offered each month, so sign up before you want to rent machines. Space is limited.

. This class covers basic serger sewing. Proper Threading and maintenance, thread tension and understanding serger features. Participants of this class will create a workbook with samples of stitches, mastering curves on your serger, creating special hems and more.

Learn the history and process of Japanese Boro Stitching while creating re- purposed cloth and then constructing a cross-body bag.

Boro means, literally, "tatters". These were made by re-purposing carefully saved garment pieces and other hand-spun and indigo-dyed fabrics --- Makers used careful patching and sometimes intricate stitching to craft these textiles, mending the same item many times over many generations.
Bring a cherished or favorite garment that is no longer wearable and honor it by stitching a new object using the Boro stitch method.

Fiber Artist, Kris Smither, will guide you through the history and process of this mindful practice during a 3 session course to complete your bag.

Student who complete this Apprenticeship program will receive multiple certificates including The Sewing Labs Certificate in Domestic Sewing Skills, Certificate in Industrial Sewing Skills and the US DOL Certificate of Apprenticeship. Each of these certificates represent a significate accomplishment by the student and a great addition to their resume whether they will become a employee or an entrepreneur.

You will learn the fundamentals of the craft of sewing, Industrial productions methods and participate in site tours to local businesses who are actively seeking to hire Industrial Sewing Machine Operators. Are you a Sewn Product Professional looking to "find your people" Sew Connected is a face-to-face meet up were we gather for FREE to build conversations and connection about our industry. Each month we gather for coffee and a short talk about what is important to us and supporting the Industry of Sewing Professionals.

What is a "Sewing Professional"? We define it as the following groups, but, if you think we left someone out - Let us know!
* Sewn Product Professional - Cut & Sew Manufacturers, Factories, Micro-factories, Custom Sewist - person/businesses being hired to sew a product in relationship to textiles like; fashion or clothing, accessories, home goods and more.
* Designers - product designers using textiles or fiber as their medium. This could include Fashion Designer, Surface Pattern Designers, Product designer.
* Supplies/Vendor - Businesses that sell the supplies needed to create the items listed above - typically wholesalers. Possible shop owners.
While we welcome most everyone - Professional Persons within the Sewing Industry is the focus. We are building this community of talented people who are eager to share and collaborate to rise each other up

Volunteer hosts are needed to keep it organized. And the support of local Coffee Co and breakfast refreshments is welcome.

New to The Sewing Labs - This course is required if you want to rent a sewing station @ TSL.
This is a 2 session course covering basic operator & safety skills for the Industrial Straight Needle and Serger machines. It covers proper threading and adjusting for different fabrics, proper tension and how to improve your stitch performance. Changing needles and feet and essential machines maintenance. It is taught by Cali Roberta - Industrial Instructor /Production Manager

Session #1 - Dec 11th - will over Industrial Straight needle machines
Session #2 - Dec 18th - will cover Industrial Serger Machines

Basic Sewing - Phase 1 - This course if for a beginner who has never sewn before or for someone who has not sewn for awhile and needs a refresher course. You will learn to operate a domestic sewing machine including threading, basic operation and safety & maintenance. You will also learn the tools of the trade and more while making some simple projects & a tool caddy. Each week you will learn a new skill and you will have home practice work to complete. At the end of this course you can earn a certification thru testing. This course is also part of our Sewing Salon program - for employment, entrepreneurship and enrichment.

This course will be lead by Cali Roberta on Saturdays & Robert Lackie - on week days -Classroom Instructors for Domestic machine.

All materials and supplies are included with this course. You can use our machines & tools or bring your own to learn with.

This course will get you back to sewing and then you can continue to more courses for additional certificates or just for self enrichment.

Sewing Machine Operator Basics

Sewing Machine Basics – Domestic = Did you receive a sewing machine as a gift or are just getting started? Learn to use your new machine or refresh your skills. If you don't have a machine but, still want to learn - you can use one of ours for this class. You will learn how to thread your machine, wind a bobbin and more. Basic sewing operations including stitch width & length & pattern selection will be covered. You will make samples as you learn for future reference.
Bring your machine and all its accessories & tools. This does not cover embroidery machines.

Online format - Do you want to start a business in sewing?
Facilitated by Jim & Trisha Fridell of the Opus Group

You will be guided by your instructors through the modules of the Smart Money program hosted thru The Sewing Labs. There are 13 models to be covered. During the 13 months program you will have the opportunity to learn different aspects of running your own sewing business taught by local business professional. In addition, local creative business professionals will share their stories of the start up and running of their businesses.

Classes will be held by Zoom on the 2nd & 4th Tuesday, from 6-7:30 pm.
You will have homework for the weeks in between. You can attend the modules monthly or sign up for the entire 13 months. (sign up for year through our website. A workbook will be provided by email.
