Unexpected Beginnings - Fulfillment
It is exciting to know & see how the first phase of
The Sewing Labs has begun....
Our mission: ... to conduct education focused on developing marketable skills in  sewing-types occupations & social life skills capital for it participants which are drawn from local  women.

Our first real mission is the "Pants Project"  What is the "Pants Project" you might ask?  Its 20,000+ pairs of pants that have to be relabeled.  This job is allowing us to test our skills at running "Fulfillment".  We have reached into the community and hired women from the programs in the Urban Core; such as Journey to New Life  & Amethyst Place
This project is giving temporary jobs up to 20+ women for about 4-6 weeks but, it is doing more than that.  These women are building their resumes for future jobs, they are buidling networks with one another for social support.  The Sewing Labs is also working to find these women other connections to get permenant and possibly full time employment afterwards.  So, let us know if you have any job openings - we will send them you way.
And Thank you to Bruce's team @ Arrow Fabricare Service for this opportunity!

I am very encouraged and thrilled with each new venture that comes into The SEWing Labs (TSL).  It justifies what I believe that strengthening a creative life - adds a voice & power of self -expression to each individual.  And sitting at a sewing machines is an equalizer - each person shares social capture that rises everyone up!  I took my grandaughter Lily Mae to the quilt show (see photo of her standing in front of her favorite quilt) and it was a delight to have her dance around with the quilts and help to pick out fabrics.  So many quilters kept asking - Is this the next generation quilter?  and I proudly stated "YES!"
 ... and the cloth continues

Journey to New Life Inc is a non profit social service organization located in Kansas City MO. It is organized to serve men and women returning to the community from prison or other involvement with the local, state or federal justice system. The goal is to assist these men and women to become successful and productive citizens and thereby make the community a safer place to live and work.
Amethyst Place serves 50-60 families and over 100 children each year. Our typical client is 30 years old, raising 2 children under 7 years old, with no more than a high school education, living on less than $10,000 per year. She was probably in foster care and/or was a runaway as a youth, and she grew up in a family with a history of drug and alcohol addiction. Most of the women as well as many of their children have suffered significant trauma prior to their residency here:  90% of our clients are dually diagnosed with substance abuse and a severe mental illness and 70% of the children have a history of foster care or other placement not with their mother. Women with a history of work in sex trafficking, as well as women recently released from prison or on probation make up a significant percentage of our population.
Thank you for the support from the Northland Quilt Guild & Nightime Needlers Quilt Guild.  The annual Quilt show was a blast with so many beautiful quilts -- see pictures.  And thank you supporting The Sewing Labs with the proceeds from teh Silent Auction of miniatures.  We are blessed to have your kindred spirit of quilting to pass onto others.  Many of the quild members also have signed up to teach classes @ The Sewing Labs.
So - stay tuned !!!!
